13 Nov New willow badger sett
It’s been an exciting month watching our new willow badger sett being created in our main courtyard at the Royal Derby. Emma Parkins has done an amazing job so far with the first badger and there are two more on the way in December. The work replaces the beautiful abstract forms by Laura Ellen Bacon which were the first willow sculptures to be commissioned at the hospital over 10 years ago.
The courtyard was prepared for the new work with help from a team of volunteers from Rolls Royce who did an amazing job of clearing away the old sculptures and the ivy.
It is important for us to have additional screening in this courtyard as the windows overlook areas used by patients. We wanted to do this in a creative and inspiring way to not only ensure privacy for patients but also to encourage smiles as people walk along the main corridor. The corridor sees around 5,000 people walk past every day so we will reach a lot of people with this work.
This project is being support by Derby Hospitals Charity who have raised money through events throughout the year to support improvements to the environment at the hospitals.
